“English. The Saint James Way” project at The IX International Congress of the Jacobean Associations (Valencia, 21-23 october)

The Spanish Federation of “Friends of the St. James Way” and its member associations meet together since 1987, throughout the Spanish territory, in the “International Congress of the Jacobean Associations”. This is a triennial meeting where pilgrims and researchers from Spain and other countries share their skills and knowledge related to the Jacobean tradition.
The city of Valencia hosted the IX International Congress of St. James and the association “Friends of the Camino de Santiago” has been entrusted to care about the organization.
The “Friends of the Camino de Santiago” of Valencia is one of the historical associations of the Federation having, their representatives, participated in the First Congress held in 1987.
The theme of the IX Congress was: the Mediterranean origin of the path:
- Holy cities, ancient routes and spirituality in the Mediterranean.
- The Jacobean paths along the Mediterranean history.
- Recovery, demarcation and signs of the different paths of St James. Shrines and relics in the Mediterranean world
- The pilgrims of the twenty-first century: unity and diversity.
- The Pilgrimage of Saint James today: debate on multiculturalism.
A delegation from Mandas, accompanied by the Mayor Oppus, asked and got the chance to take part in the congress of Valencia, in the name of the geographic location of the island of Sardinia, in the middle of Mediterranean sea and for the particular involvement historical, cultural and religious of Sardinia, in the topics of the congress.
We have tried to bring to the attention of the Spanish Federation, the great effort that is taking place in Sardinia to arrive at the official birth of a Sardinian Saint James Way , thanks to the fundamental contribution of the European Union: Sardinia is in fact involved, as Italian partner , in the European project called “English. The Saint James Way”.
This is a literacy project in English, dedicated to the Jacobean associations and to the owners of rural tourist facilities, which operate along the St. James’ ways in Europe.
The English language is a crucial means of communication between peoples , allowing dialogue between people of different languages, which otherwise could not communicate . We thought to provide all those who works long the St. James’ ways, a tool that helps them to acquire some English basic skills to communicate with the pilgrims of all nationalities and backgrounds.
The project is now in its final phase and will be officially launched in Brussels in early December. The European partners who have worked with Italy are: Spain, France, Holland and Belgium.
At the conclusion of the Congress of Valencia, the delegation of Sardinia has donated to the congress participants and to those who wanted more detailed information about the projects, some gadgets made with the logo of “English. The Saint James Way” and that of “Santu Jacu”, the emblem of the Way of St. James in Sardinia.

La Federazione spagnola degli Amici del Cammino di Santiago (FEAACS) e le federazioni affiliate si riuniscono fin dal 1987, su tutto il territorio spagnolo, nel cosiddetto “Congresso Internazionale delle Associazioni Giacobee”. Si tratta di un incontro triennale in cui pellegrini e ricercatori della Spagna e di altri paesi condividono le loro competenze e conoscenze legate alla tradizione giacobea.
La città di Valencia ha ospitato il IX Congresso Internazionale di San Giacomo e l’associazione “Amici del Camino de Santiago” ha ricevuto l’incarico di curarne l’organizzazione .
Gli “Amici del Camino di Santiago” della Comunità Valenciana sono una delle associazioni storiche della Federazione, avendo, i loro rappresentanti, preso parte già al Primo Congresso tenutosi nel 1987.
Il tema del IX Congresso era il Mediterraneo nell’ origine del cammino:
Si intende mostrare l’origine mediterranea della nostra cultura, della nostra tradizione religiosa e la devozione a San Giacomo al di là dell’origine medievale del pellegrinaggio a Compostela.
I temi centrali su cui si sono incentrati gli incontri sono legati al Mediterraneo:
• Città sacre, percorsi millenari e spiritualità nel Mediterraneo.
• I percorsi gacobei mediterranei lungo la storia.
• Il recupero, la delimitazione e segnaletica dei diversi cammini di San Giacomo. Santuari e reliquie nel mondo mediterraneo.
• I pellegrini del XXI secolo: unità e diversità.
• Il Cammino di Santiago di oggi: dibattito sul multiculturalismo.
Una delegazione del Comune di Mandas, accompagnata dal Sindaco Oppus ha chiesto e gentilmente ottenuto di poter prendere parte al congresso, sebbene non esista ancora nel piccolo centro della Trexenta, un’associazione giacobea vera e propria, ma in virtù della posizione geografica al centro del Medirraneo dell’isola sarda e per il particolare coinvolgimento di carattere storico, culturale e religioso, nelle tematiche trattate nel congresso.
L’intento era quello di portare all’attenzione della federazione spagnola, il grande sforzo che in Sardegna si sta compiendo per arrivare al traguardo della nascita ufficiale di un Cammino di Santiago sardo, anche grazie al fondamentale contributo dell’Unione Europea, che vede l’isola coinvolta, quale partner italiano, nel progetto europeo denominato “English. The Saint James Way”.
Si tratta di un progetto di alfabetizzazione in lingua inglese, rivolto alle associazioni giacobee e ai gestori delle strutture turistiche rurali, che operano lungo i cammini di San Giacomo in Europa.
La lingua Inglese rappresenta un determinante strumento di comunicazione fra i popoli, permettendo essa il dialogo fra persone di lingue diverse che altrimenti non potrebbero comunicare. Si è pensato pertanto di mettere a disposizione di tutti coloro che operano lungo i cammini, siano essi associazioni o strutture ricettive rurali, uno strumento che li aiuti ad acquisire quelle competenze linguistiche di base , per poter comunicare con i pellegrini di ogni nazionalità e provenienza.
Il progetto è ormai giunto alla sua fase conclusiva e verrà ufficialmente presentato a Bruxelles nei primi giorni di dicembre. I partner europei che hanno lavorato insieme all’Italia, sono: Spagna, Francia, Olanda e Belgio.
Alla conclusione del Congresso di Valencia, la delegazione sarda , ha omaggiato i partecipanti ai lavori e a quanti desideravano avere informazioni più dettagliate sui progetti, di alcuni gadget realizzati con il logo del progetto “English. The Saint James Way” e quello di “Santu Jacu”, emblema del Cammino di San Giacomo in Sardegna.

Pilot course under way in France

During the 5th meeting, considering that we all speak in various languages and that after some intense work, we some times get mixed up and weird sentences are created!! Such as: ‘come out of the station and go East, walk straight down the street…’ This is where we should have our Saint James Way compass with us, to find out where the East is!!!

Did you know that it’s called THE SHELL OF SAINT JAMES? It comes from an animal called a SCALLOP, so you can also call it a SCALLOP SHELL.

Here is some more information about the shell from Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scallop#Shell_of_Saint_James) The scallop shell is the traditional emblem of James, son of Zebedee and is popular with pilgrims on the Way of St James to the apostle’s shrine at Santiago de Compostela in Spain. Medieval Christians making the pilgrimage to his shrine often wore a scallop shell symbol on their hat or clothes.

Meeting in Amersfoort (NL)

The St James project is travelling to the NL. Next Wednesday (21th) all partners will meet in Amersfoort and work hard (as usual) on several items like linguistic platform, testing activities, selection of pilot testers and many …many others important aspects.

This is our last chance to fix everything before the final European conference in Brussels at the end of the year.
